"Extension's library and information studies courses offer an opportunity to examine new technologies, resources, and techniques for handling and processing information of all kinds. Whether you are a professional librarian or someone who simply wants to make the best use of your library, our courses can provide information and resources to help you in your work."

"The library  world is incredibly diverse --- public, academic, corporate, medical, school --- and each area has its own special skills and needs. I'm not an expert in any library field. I think of myself now as a person whose talents lie in the areas of development and presentation of continuing education courses: my task is to work with librarians, and to listen, in order to develop the course you need. I'd like to hear your ideas, and I hope you'll join us in the classroom."

Jane Fisher earned her M.L.S. degree from UC Berkeley and has worked as a school librarian as well as at a variety of library tasks, including preparing bibliographies, cataloging non-print media, and abstracting and indexing computer literature. For the past seven years she has been the program director for Extension's courses in Library & Information Studies.

"Libraries now are different from the libraries of my childhood. My 12-year-old son is adept and comfortable using today's automated catalogs and computerized retrieval tools to find the information he needs. The information explosion requires new and better ways to organize and access information. Extension courses are designed to bring you up to speed with these new technologies, from information resources for specific disciplines to online database and worldwide network communications."
