"The educators Extension attracts, as students and as instructors, are representative of what's truly great about our educational system. From acquiring state-of-the-art skills in classroom use of computer technologies to gaining a new understanding of how to effectively teach diverse student populations, these educators demonstrate an exemplary love of learning. And it is this enthusiasm that lends excitement to the teaching/learning process at all levels, from pre-school through college and adult education."

After completing her B.A. in social science and teaching in Liberia as a Peace Corps volunteer, Sue Smith earned her M.A. in education at San Francisco State University. Most of her career has been centered at UC Berkeley, where she served as a Letters & Sciences College Advisor, as Assistant Dean to Students, and for 10 years as Chair of Extension's Education Department and Program Director for writing courses. She now devotes full time to the writing program, and to developing special programs in science and the humanities.

"The humanities encompass so much of what nourishes our sense of being and belonging in a world community. From learning another language to appreciating the language of literature --- or writing your own publishable story --- the possibilities for thought and study offered in this section will nourish your inquiring, creative, and adventurous sensibilities."
