"When we confront the great themes of human history, we encounter the values we must pass on to our children --- values that are as important in their education as preparing for a career is. Adults who study the works of the world's great writers and thinkers and who contemplate the good society and the role of the individual in it are setting the stage for the next generation. There is no greater task."

"'Building a new California' means thinking about who we are as a people. We need to understand each other better. We need to learn to speak other's language, to learn about each other's culture. Through our courses in languages, history and culture, literature and philosophy, and writing and publishing, we at Extension celebrate the diversity that is California's resource and strength, create the ideas that move us forward, and develop the skills to articulate the knowledge that results."
