I photographed Alfred Kroeber back in 1951. This came about
because the KPFA radio station had a discussion and panel a few years
before. I exchanged photographic services for a spot advertisement
with the station, when someone from the New York publishing house, Walden
Books, took the recordings, and Kroeber, of course, was one of the people on
the panel. Their wanting a picture of the anthropologist led to
Kroeber and I getting together for the first time. A number of years
later I did a large body of work with his wife, Theadora, but she was
unaware that I had photographed Alfred.
