Chairman
of the University YMCA Advisory Board
since 1903 and continuously associated with the
Y since he was a freshman in 1887.
During the many years that I have observed the operations of the University
Y, there have been spectacular changes in its surroundings, both in the
University itself, in the community where it is located, as well as in the
State. Like all human institutions it has fluctuations in its effectiveness
but there has never been a time when it stagnated or was unwilling to cope
with the changing conditions that it met. It initiated numerous activities
on behalf of the students which were subsequently taken over by the
University or by Stephens Union. As these were laid aside new fields of
usefulness were sought and exploited.
I deem it a great
privilege to have had continuing contact through the decades with the stream
of young life that constantly flows to Berkeley from the State. I take pride
in following the careers of those individuals whom I have known personally.
From both mass observation and individual sampling, I am convinced that the
youth of California is essentially sound, definitely forward looking and
worthy of our support in efforts at self-expression.
