This is one of my early portraits, but I think it
holds its interest. The Blake family donated the estate where the
president of the University lives. They were an extremely
generous family. In my portraiture it's important to keep your
interpretations of people to a minimum. You've got to butt out and let
these people express themselves. Otherwise you will never get a face as
pure and touching as Mrs. Anson Blake's. You can see the purity of that
woman's life in this picture. It's all there; it's all up front about
her.
