Singer, guitarist; born in Birminham, Alabama (1930). During the folk revival
of the 1950s and 1960s she was known for her performances of African-American
folk music and her albums with a repertory of spirituals, blues, and
children's songs. She toured the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe in 1974 and
appeared in films, stage musicals, and on television.
