I have always felt that a portrait should be an
accurate biography of a person. I had not met Beni Bufano before
photographing him, but I had admired him and his work from a distance. He
was just over five feet tall, but as you can see he was a very muscular
man. He took pride in that. Most of his statues were enormous things, as
tall as the roof of our building. I always thought that was some sort of
compensation for his small stature. He was a very opinionated man, not
at all wishy-washy. But he also has a sense of humor. I think you feel
these things about him when you look at his portrait.
