"The distinction between full-
and part-time students is blurring rapidly. I hope we'll see major
changes in the structure of Extension and its relation to campus to
reflect this lifestyle shift to true lifelong learning."
Milton R. Stern, Dean Emeritus
During the past 20 years Dean Stern has helped earn an impressive
reputation for UC Berkeley Extension, now one of the more successful and
imaginative university continuing education programs in the country.
Recognized throughout the international continuing
education community, Dean Stern has been a champion of and spokesman for
continuing education for almost 50 years. He is a master at coining
phrases to capture popular attention for important concepts. In his many
books, articles, and speeches, with ideas such as the "40-year
curriculum," "post-tertiary education," and "the
invisible university," he has developed a style of thinking about
continuing education that has come to define the field.
In addition to the high regard of his peers, Dean Stern
has received numerous honors and awards, including an honorary Doctorate
of Humane Letters from The John Hopkins University; Chevalier dans
l'ordre des Palmes Académiques from the French government; the Paul A.
McGhee Medal conferred by New York University; and the Julius M. Nolte
award, the highest award conferred by the National University Continuing
Education Association.
